Results
(PDF Format) Report by Jason Walsh: The Third Lady Liberty Regatta again brought some of the top women sailors from across the United States to New York Harbor for challenging competition in view of the Statue of Liberty and the City of New York. The Regatta was part of the Sail for America weekend, organized by the New York Harbor Sailing Foundation and hosted by Manhattan Yacht Club. This year, twelve teams were at the starting line, with skippers having America’s Cup pedigrees or currently on the US Sailing Team – Hannah Swett, Dawn Riley, Lee Icyda, and Melissa Purdy – as well as nationally and internationally ranked women sailors and college All-Americans – Amy Berry, Sandy Grosvenor, Erin Maxwell, Thalia Pascalides, and Heidi Riddle. Competing on behalf of the New York Region were Manhattan and Manhasset Bay Yacht Club skippers Danielle Gallo, Sue Miller, and Kate Morgan. A full schedule of eight races were completed. The conditions were quite varied, with shifty southerly winds varying broadly in intensity both days and with strong current affecting Saturday’s racing. The top teams proved their ability to consistently perform across these conditions, with the top spot going to former Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year and the champion of the first Lady Liberty Regatta, Heidi Backus Riddle. Second was claimed by last year’s champion, Olympic campaigner and America’s Cup sailor Hannah Swett. Third went to her Olympic campaign crew member, Melissa Purdy; fourth to America’s Cup CEO and Rolex Yachtswoman, Dawn Riley, and fifth to Manhattan’s Kate Morgan. Along with the racing, each of the competing and race committee boats flew memorial flags in honor of the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Full Results were:
