Mission Statement

New York Harbor is experiencing a renaissance. Recreational sailing has returned after an absence of many decades.  The New York Harbor Sailing Foundation is proud to help lead the way.

By bringing important sailing events to the harbor, the Foundation is increasing the awareness of all New Yorkers in our great recreational resource.

In 2008, the Foundation is creating Operation Optimist, NYC's first junior sailing program in the harbor.

In 2007, the Foundation organized the first New York Classic Week.

In 2005, the Foundation established the Atlantic Cup to recognize the Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Record.

In 2004, the Foundation created the Regatta for the City Council to help build awareness among civic officials about the growth of recreation in the harbor.

In 1999, the Foundation organized the International Sandbagger Series which will brought together yacht clubs from around the world to race in New York Harbor.

In 1998, the Foundation organized the first Lady Liberty Regatta which brought together some of the best women sailors in the country for a competition in front of the Statue of Liberty.

Who Are We?

We are a group of avid, amateur sailors, both racers and cruisers, who's primary goal is to increase national and international sailing competitions in New York Harbor. This harbor used to be the sailing capital of the world. We are uniting sailors and organizations and by working together, will make New York Harbor a capital again.

Board of Directors

Why Are We Doing This?

Because New York Harbor is one of the most beautiful harbors in the world. Most people do not know this. People imagine the harbor as polluted and full of commercial traffic. But shipping has decreased and the harbor has been cleaned thanks to concerned citizens and environmental organizations. Now, New York Harbor and the cities surrounding it are perfect staging areas for national and international gatherings.

What Are We Going To Do?

With tax-deductible contributions we will encourage and promote amateur events of national and international significance in New York Harbor. We will organize our own events and support events organized by other groups. We will create a clearing house of information about the harbor to improve communication and awareness. We will approach private and public organizations and encourage them to participate in the harbor’s renaissance.

How Can You Get Involved?

Anyone interested in the future of New York Harbor is encouraged to contact us. We need volunteers to help research, plan and administer events. We need organizations to provide resources. We need sponsors and supporters to help underwrite our efforts. Together, we can achieve our goals and make the harbor a better place.

The New York Harbor Sailing Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit corporation incorporated in New York State. We are registered as a 501(c)(3) organization with the Internal Revenue Services and donations to us are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
