New York
Classic Week 2008 "America II" wins by going clockwise around course. "Northern Lights" goes counter clockwise and finishes second.
The final race known as the "Farwell Race" took place at New York Classic Week with a circular course heading around the harbor and an option by yachts to go either way. A light north easterly breeze was blowing at the start and the starting line was in the lee of the skyline of Manhattan. Occasionally, a gust would blow down the Hudson River from the north. There was a flooding tide. At the start, most boats were on the line but unable to make positive distance against the current. An early ebb against the Manhattan seawall turned into a flood. After 30 minutes, yachts worked their way towards the New Jersey shore. Then "America II" and "Pride of Baltimore II" bore off to round the course clockwise while the rest of the fleet went counter-clockwise. "Northern Lights" led the counter clockwise fleet with "When And If," "Adirondack," "Pinta" and "Imagine" in close pursuit. They all seemed like they were well ahead of "America II" and "Pride of Baltimore II" who chose the opposite path. But in the end, the wind died in Buttermilk Channel and "America II" to round the turning mark in the center of the harbor and headed for hom with a north westerly breeze and a flooding tide. She crossed in front of the other fleet before the north west changed back to north east and eventually died altogether. The second edition of New York Classic Week came to an end with a beautiful day of sailing and finally some sun and champagne.
