New York
Classic Week 2008 "Black Watch" takes lead after start and wins by 20 minutes! "Salty" captures second in the light and shifty winds.
The signature race of New York Classic Week is the Statue of Liberty Race paying tribute to the grand dame of the harbor. This event features 3 turns around the harbor's 29 Gong Buoy which is located in front of the Statue. Light winds were shifting between west and north at the starting line. 12 Meter "America II" crossed the starting line first but "Black Watch" exhibited a speed edge, passing "America II" to leeward. By the first mark, "Black Watch" had established a good lead. "America II" was the only other yacht nearby with the rest of the fleet having a slow time getting away from the starting line area. When "America II's" main halyard broke, it knocked them out of the race leaving "Black Watch" to continue her romp around the course.
Photo: "Salty" was the NY 32 which finished second in the Statue of Liberty Race. In the end, "Black Watch" finished 24 minutes ahead of second place finisher "Salty," a beautiful NY 30 yacht. Third and fourth went to Adirondack and Northern Light who finished within 1 minute of each other.
