Classic Week 2008 "Adirondack" shows blazing speed to win! "America II" finishes second in blustery day with gusts to 25 knots.
Strong winds from the west buffeted the race course again for the second day in a row. This was the Verrazano Narrows Bridge Race. After starting off North Cove, the fleet raced south, many achieving speeds of over 10 knots.
Photo: "Adirondack" and the Verrazano Narrows Bridge are seen here from the stern of "America II." Adirondack had such blazing speed on the reach that she passed America II and won the race! "America II" led at the start with "Black Watch" close on their tail. The rest of the fleet was behind. But at the turning mark set directly below the bridge, "Adirondack" passed "Black Watch." In the reach back to the finish, "Adirondack" began closing on "America II." There is no other way to describe her performance other than she was leaping from wave to wave. She really showed her stuff. At the finish, "Adirondack" scored a deserved victory. On corrected time, her partner vessel "Imagine" finished third, just 1 second out of second.
