3rd New York Classic Week

Notice of Race

October 2009

1. Vision

Classic yacht racing is experiencing a world-wide renaissance and New York Harbor is experiencing a sailing renaissance.  Therefore, all classic yachts are encouraged to come race in front of the Statue of Liberty and the skyline of Manhattan.  Please bring your beautiful yachts to New York Harbor and share the beauty of classic sailing with more people.

2. Spirit

This regatta is run by sailors for sailors.  The spirit of the regatta is to build camaraderie among sailors.  It is also to thank the owners who support classic sailing and preserve these historic vessels.  At the same time, an eye will be kept on the seawall in the hope of inspiring new people to develop a passion for sailing and classic yachting.

3. Organizers

The New York Harbor Sailing Foundation is providing overall organization for New York Classic Week.  The Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.  It’s mission is to foster and promote amateur sailing of national and international importance in New York Harbor (www.nyharborsailing.com).   Dennis Conner’s North Cove is the primary dockage facility for New York Classic Week.  This is NYC’s mega-yacht marina located on the Hudson River in Lower Manhattan (www.TheNorthCove.com).   Manhattan Sailing Club will provide race management.  The club organizes weekly races in the harbor (www.myc.org).

4. Entry

All classic yachts are invited and encouraged to participate in New York Classic Week.  Because there are many definitions of “classic,” the Organizers will review each application for eligibility.  Modern yachts which embody the Spirit of Tradition are also welcomed to participate.  Entry Form

5. Rules

All races will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing and by the Sailing Instructions.

7. Entry Fees

The entry fee will be $35 per race entered.

9. Concours d’Elegance

One of the highlights of New York Classic Week is the Concours d’Elegance competition at North Cove.  This show of style, elegance and beauty will be on Thursday evening.  All yachts are encouraged to dress ship and put on their best display.

A panel of judges comprised of yachting enthusiasts and New York representatives will walk around the marina to inspect and judge each yacht on a variety of criteria.  The results will then be tabulated and awards presented.   Please deck your ships.

This evening of beauty will be announced through the press and we hope that many people will come to see the display and be inspired to get involved in classic sailing.

10. Dockage

The main dockage facility will be Dennis Conner’s North Cove.  Yachts must make their dockage reservations directly with North Cove at www.TheNorthCove.com.  North Cove provides unmatched access to Manhattan as well as public exposure for the classic yachts.     North Cove is limited in size and more suitable to larger yachts.  There are also other locations in the harbor which can provide dockage.

11. Racing Divisions

Depending on the number of yachts which enter, the fleet may be divided into multiple Racing Divisions.  The Divisions will be established in an effort to have yachts of similar size, age and ability sail against each other.

12. Advertising & Corporate Logos

This is an amateur event designed to celebrate the history and tradition of sailing.  In addition, advertising and/or corporate logos may flown or displayed from any boat at any time during the regatta.

13. Prizes

Separate prizes will be awarded for each race.  The Prize Giving will be during the social event each evening.
