Transiting the East River Important Note 9/26: The USCG has activated additional security measures around the United Nations from Sep 23 to Oct 5. These significantly reduce the times when recreational vessels can transit the West Channel of the East River. The East Channel of the East River (on the east side of Roosevelt Island) remains open. Please check your chart for vertical clearance of the Roosevelt Island Bridge which is listed as 40 feet when down and 99 feet when raised. Vessels requiring the opening of the Roosevelt Island Bridge must contact the bridge tender at least 15 minutes in advance by phone at 646-772-9551 of VHF CH 13. USCG Advisory Notice. Currents can be your friend or foe. If you understand how they work, they are a great friend because you can cover significantly more ground than without them. The East River which separates Long Island Sound from New York Harbor can have very strong currents, especially in the location of Hell's Gate. If you are traveling in a sailboat, you should always navigate the East River with a favorable or a slack current. Current information is available in the Eldridge Tide Book. After the pages detailing high and low water at the Battery, you will find a series of current charts showing each hour after high tide and each hour after low tide. Tides and current are different. They do not change at the same time. For example, off North Cove, the current changes at approximately 2.5 hours after high tide and 3 hours after low tide. If you arrive and think the current will be slack at low tide, you will find 3 more hours of ebb! By studying the current charts in Eldridge you will be able to figure out what the current should be doing in the harbor at any specific time relative to high and low water. The information below about good times to pass through the East River have all been derived from Eldridge Tide Book. We encourage you to get a tide book and double check all figures to ensure their accuracy.
