Equipment for Your Opti Sailors

Here are some items you might consider purchasing for your Opti sailor.

Lifejacket

All sailors will be required to wear a coast guard approved life jacket while on the docks and the boats for their own safety. Make sure the life jacket is suited for the sailor’s size and weight and is comfortable to wear. Extrasport is a leading brand in life jackets for junior sailors. Specifically the Loch, Riverine, Eddy, and Stiletto styles are great life jackets, and we have found the best online sources for Extrasport to be:

Colie Sails Pro Shop, Point Pleasant, NJ:

Local sporting goods stores may also carry life jackets.

Footwear

Sailing boots or shoes are worn for grip and protection on the boats. We suggest a closed-toe boot or shoe from one of the leading brands Gill, Zhik, and Ronstan, which can be found at both:

Gloves

Sailing gloves are used to get better grip on lines and to protect the hands while sailing. Some commonly used brands are Gill, Harken, and Ronstan, and they too can be found at:

Sun Protection− Sunglasses, a hat, and waterproof sunscreen should be worn each day for sun protection. Croakies for the sunglasses and a tie for the hat are also suggested to prevent either from falling into the water.
